Augusto Santana

After drumming for a year with a simple snare drum all around his neighbourhood, Augusto’s parents realized his commitment to study music and gave him his first real full drum kit.

Seduced by the rock & roll movement of the sixties and seventies in his native Uruguay, Augusto sought formal instruction at the age of 12. His teacher (recognizing his natural rhythmic gifting), instructed Augusto in snare drum techniques. With this knowledge, he focused on learning swing, jazz, pop and rock ‘n roll. With influences from bands such as Jethro Tull, the Police, Yes, Deep Purple, the Who, Carlos Santana, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and the Doobie Brothers, Augusto eventually developed his own unique drumming style.

In the late seventies there was a strong movement within Latin American pop music. At that time, there were strong cultural and social changes coursing throughout Uruguay; a key factor of which was the new popular lat music. Augusto joined the band, ‘Los Solitarios’, recording two albums with them; thus starting his professional musical career.

In the mid eighties Augusto founded the band ‘La Fragua’, (together with his bass player and friend Jose Arce from Los Solitarios). The band performed for 20 years and recorded several albums, focusing on Uruguayan Pop Music and Latin Jazz in the latest years. Their recordings could be heard on local radio stations and on many occasions the band performed live on national TV. ‘La Fragua’ shared the stage with the best musicians in the Uruguay.

In 2005 Augusto came to Toronto. Since then, this has been his musical career:

2008 - Little Peter & the elegants (R&R from 50-60's)
2009 - Retrospect (R&R and Pop from 70 & 80's)
2010 - Nighthawk (R&R, Blues and Country Music from the 70's)
2010 - Performs for the Bad Dog Theatre company.

It's also in the 2010 when he was contacted by Andre Van Der Hoogen, a prestigious member of the Toronto Organ Club and a gifted Hammond organ player, who invited him to play Jazz for the good of music and friendship.
